Charles Wells brewery was founded in 1875 by Charles Wells, who bought an exisiting brewery with 32 pubs in Bedford. The company moved to modern purpose built premises in Havelock St, Bedford, in1976. The company merged with the London brewery Young’s in 2006, splitting off the pub owning business to become a brewing only operation under the name Wells & Young’s which then acquired the rights to the Courage brands. In 2011 Charles Wells acquired 100% control of the brewing and reintegrated the pub business. The company again operates under the Charles Wells name, though still with control of Courage and Young’s brands.
